Antonín Dvořák: Biblické písně (Biblical Songs) Op.99
Biblical Songs (Op. 99, B. 185) are a cycle of ten songs for low voice and piano set to texts from the Book of Psalms in the Czech translation of the Bible known as the Kralice Bible. Dvořák wrote them in New York from March 5–26, 1894, during his time at the National Conservatory. The cycle is considered the pinnacle of Dvořák’s song output and one of the most important works of its kind. The music is incredibly intimate, simple, humble, without showiness – it expresses faith, anxiety, trust, and joy.
